How to Build a Basic Skincare Routine

Skincare is a form of self care. It is a part of morning and evening routines, to refresh or wind down. With so many products, devices, tips and tricks out there finding clarity is difficult. Despite the trends telling us to add new steps to our routines every day it seems, skincare can be a simple and sustainable habit. If you are looking for ways to simplify your routine or build one from scratch I hope you will find this article helpful.

Instead of choosing products by themselves determine a routine that includes the essential steps you need to follow to keep your skin healthy. Then pick up a product for each step without burning a hole in your pocket. Here are a few steps that could be part of your basic routine.

Wash. Moisturize. Repeat.

The primary step is wash and moisturize. Yes these two go hand in hand. You can skip everything in between. These are the foundation of a good skincare routine. Washing your face and applying a moisturizer regularly, especially at night, keeps the skin healthy. Thus a face wash and a moisturizer suited to your skin type are two staple products in a basic skincare routine.

Sunscreen

Wear sunscreen in the daytime to protect your skin from damage and reapply throughout the day. It is however important to remember that the best protection from sun damage is covering up and staying out of direct sunlight, using hats, umbrellas etc.

Target Your Needs

Depending on your skin concerns you can add certain steps to your routine. Acne, dry flaky skin, oiliness, pigmentation - choose a product which targets your skin’s particular needs. Products in this category include scrubs, peels, toners, serums, essences, spot treatments, masks, eye creams etc. One or two is enough – too many products can overwhelm the skin and you may find it harder to stick to the routine. If you don’t have any issues or you just don’t care these are not really required.

Consistency is Key

No matter what products you use stick to the basics and let the products work on the skin. Be patient and stay consistent with a routine that works for you. This is gentler on the skin, the mind, and not to mention, the pocket. Rather than accumulating a lot of items keep to the few that give you the most value.

With all the information and options out there, skincare tends to become a hard puzzle to solve. But it is possible to achieve good skin with a few products and some consistency. Approach to build a routine based on the steps rather than the products. Decide which steps in the routine are actually necessary for you and you are willing to follow. And in no time you will come up with a basic skincare routine that you will enjoy day after day.
